I hate that out of state trainings and travels take you away from your family, but I have no problem welcoming the break and having the opportunity to the explore whatever the city has to offer. This month, we spent a few days in Kansas City, Missouri for professional development to enhance our skills in dealing with hard to reach populations on campus.
I’m not upset because the great thing about most of our of state travels is that trainings are usually over by 5PM, which allows us time to relax and debrief, but also gives us plenty of time each day for adventures. So when the books close, I am out the door!
Exploring Kansas City, MO
On my first evening in Kansas City, I was able to watch a Symphony Water Show outdoors while eating Macho Nachos from Z-Teca Fresh Mexican Grill!
On the second evening there, I explored the Wizard of Oz Exhibit in Crown Center and dined at Milano Italian Dining with a new colleague. Our meeting was totally crazy. We sat near each other on the plane and didn’t know who each other were.
Later, throughout some workshops, we totally hit it off and ended up meeting for dinner later that evening. I was able to learn about her culture in Alaska and tell a little about mine living in Illinois.
Discovery of King Tut Exhibit at Union Station
And, on my final evening there, I explored the Discovery of King Tut Exhibit at Union Station! This was by far the most wonderful exhibit I have ever experienced.
The Discovery of King Tut exhibit at Union Station is a traveling exhibition that showcases artifacts and treasures from the tomb of the famous Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun.
The exhibit features over 150 replicas of objects found in the tomb, including his golden death mask, chariots, and jewelry.
Visitors can explore the ancient world of Egypt and learn about the life and death of the young king through interactive displays and multimedia presentations.
General Adult Admission was $19.95 and well worth it.
This was not just a walk through exhibit. Upon your admission, you were given state of the art technology that actually walked you through the entire exhibit creating the most vivid pictures for you.
I learned so much about the forgotten Pharaoh, Tutankhamun and Egypt that I couldn’t wait to come back and share with the boys.
Teaching My Boys
There was a great deal to see and learn including tombs, treasures, and so much about pharaohs. Exploring the entire exhibit took at least an hour and a half, if not more. Not to mention, the gift shop!?
Once I returned home, I explained to the boys that I wanted to take them, but when I looked it up, the exhibit had left Kansas City and was not scheduled to be back on tour in the United States that year. I didn’t realize at the time that it was a traveling exhibit that came all the way from Cairo, Egypt.
Final Thoughts
In the meantime, I bought them a book on ancient Egypt that we read and discussed together over time. I also picked up a few $1 excavation tomb kits from Dollar Tree so that they could work on to help with their learning and curiosity. If I ever get the chance again, this is def. an exhibit I want them to experience.

On our recent trip to St. Louis, Missouri over the weekend, I saw a billboard that the Discovery of King Tut exhibit was there at the St. Louis Science Center! Whoohoo! I am so excited that I have a second chance to be able to take my boys and get better images than the ones I took on my camera phone a few years back. We’ll see what happens!
