Building the Dream Team of Management

Building the Dream Team of Management

Recently, I stepped into a new management role. It is truly a noteworthy accomplishment, especially since it’s a position that is responsible for charting the course toward the organization’s overall objectives. With this being said, in this post, we will explore what it takes to be a new and well-respected manager, as well as what it takes to build a new management team to move the department even further.

Teamwork

One of the first skills to consider as a new manager building a team is teamwork. Teamwork is the ability to work effectively with others, communicate, collaborate, and contribute to a common goal.

Furthermore, teamwork allows for the entire group to benefit by enabling a vast range of diverse skills, education, experiences, perspectives, etc. which promotes a sense of shared ownership and accountability for the department or group. It also helps with personal and professional goals and growth and assists with keeping morale from tanking.

Training and Professional Development

If you feel that your current team is lacking in working cohesively together or lacks proper training, consider planning some leadership retreats or industry training. Keeping your team up to date with professional development is essential as your team needs to have regular training and refreshers so that they are in line with industry standards.

Workplace Culture

Aside from the above-mentioned points, consider your workplace culture. Workplace culture refers to the collective values, beliefs, behaviors, and practices that shape the environment and atmosphere where your team works. And, with us spending a considerable amount of our lives at work, workplace culture must be examined.

Be sure that you work to create a culture that is positive and healthy, therefore fostering employee satisfaction, productivity, and overall success.

Performance

As you continue to envision the future success of the department and think through your department’s needs in terms of hiring, consider performance-based hiring. Performance-based hiring is important because it increases the likelihood of hiring the right candidates, aligns employees with job requirements, and leads to improved job performance, job satisfaction, and overall organizational success. Overall, this makes it a win-win for both employers and employees.

Mentoring

Lastly is the idea of having a good mentor. In the first year of my position before moving into this role, I spent one year with a mentor who helped develop me. Great leadership takes work. Having a great team takes work.

So be sure to encourage mentorship within your department or team. Mentors who specialize in supporting those in leadership and management roles can be an invaluable tool.

Final Thoughts

In summary, being a strong manager and creating a top management team requires teamwork, training, a positive culture, performance-based hiring, and mentoring for success.
