We Finally Made It To Mammoth Cave National Park!

Mammoth Cave National Park is located in Cave City, Kentucky and is open year-round. If you are concerned about time zones, please note it is in the Central Time Zone.

Mammoth Cave National Park in 2016

On our 2016 fall vacation, we spent about four days in Cave City, Kentucky. At the time, I was still thinking about the direction of my blog, so I didn’t document it at that time. Months later into 2017, I finally decided to give peek into what our time spent in Cave City was like.

We loved it!

My only vice was that we never actually made it to Mammoth Cave National Park, as planned. At the time, our plan was to drive through the park, admire its beauty, have a picnic, and take a late fall tour such as the Frozen Niagara Tour or Mammoth Passage Tour.

Underground Cave Tour

Instead, we ended up spending an entire afternoon at Kentucky Down Under Adventure Zoo which included its own underground cave tour of Mammoth Onyx Cave which was included in admission. See below 😉

After completing that tour, it scared my youngest son, who was about six at the time, so I made no aggressive plans to get to Mammoth Cave on the remainder of the visit. I simply told myself that we would be back another time.

That time was this year’s fall vacation! Everything happens in its own time.

Advice and Tips

If you aren’t able to make it to Kentucky Down Under for their Mammoth Onyx Cave Tour, definitely make time to take a tour at Mammoth Cave National Park. If there is heavy rain, some of the caves can flood and you won’t be able to take the tour.

Taking the underground tours are a great experience, even if you do it only once.
