Helping the Helpless: Could a Career in Nursing Be Right for You?

Last week, I was scrolling social media and came across the meme below. I laughed and cried at the same time because we are that family. Ever since my dad had his stroke last year, we have been that family that I am sure nurses dread. So, today I want to talk about nursing careers and could a career in nursing be right for you.

When you are trying to choose the perfect career, it is important to consider a lot of different elements. There are many things that play a part in this and you must make sure you think about the different choices out there.

One of the most popular and fulfilling careers out there is a career in the world of nursing and medicine. This is often considered to be a calling as opposed to simply a job.

Trust me. I work with students pursuing nursing all the time at the community college level.

Think About What You’re Like as a Person

You need to realize what you are like as a person and whether nursing fits with the way you are. There are a lot of career options for the natural nurturer, but it definitely feels like nursing ranks as one of the most popular.

This is a role where you are going to find out a lot about who you are and what you can do. Think carefully about this before you get started, and it will go a long way toward helping you consider this.

Understand the Complexities

Understand the entire job and everything it entails if you are serious about bringing things to the next level. You have to appreciate what it takes to improve the way you do this job, and that means understanding the complexities of it.

Nursing is not easy.

There are a lot of things that have to happen if you are looking to become a nurse. Make sure you know what you’re getting into first and foremost.

Are You Cut Out for It?

Another thing you need to ask yourself is whether or not you are cut out for this. And the only way to know for sure is to actually do it. Yes, the online nurse practitioner program is one that is really important to get right, and this is going to tell you a lot about the profession. But, in order to know if it is right for you, you are going to have to make sure you think about whether you are cut out for sometimes lower pay than you expected, long shifts, and dealing with loss.

Being Professional at all Times

Then you have the situations of dealing with families like mine. Nurses don’t have the luxury of having meltdowns, arguments, and any of that sort of thing.

At the end of the day, lives are at stake, and it is important for nurses to make sure they are professional at all times. This is something that can be difficult for a lot of people to process and it’s one of the key reasons why nursing is not for everyone.

Final Thoughts on a Career in Nursing

I know I have only scratched the surface regarding nursing careers in this post. But, keep in mind that there are so many wonderful reasons why a person should become a nurse. But you also need to think about why you are the right person for this career and why the career is right for you.
