I would argue that every person carries within them a treasure trove of cherished childhood memories. Some are filled with laughter, joy, and boundless imagination. Others hold a special place in our hearts, serving as a testament to the love and care we received from our loved ones.
One memory that has remained etched in my mind is an amusement park called Kiddieland. When my younger brother and I were about four and five, our dad would take us to Kiddieland. We would have the best time!
One day, I decided that I would take my own children to Kiddieland and came to the hard realization that the amusement park no longer existed. However, I learned from Atlas Obscura that the sign had been adopted by the Melrose Park Library, not far from where we used to live.
At that very moment, I made it one of my 100 Life Goals to visit the sign with loving thoughts of my dad in my heart. Over the past weekend, the visit happened and the iconic Kiddieland sign still stands.
Here’s how it happened.
Over the weekend, my mom, daughter, and I were en route to the new Malibu Barbie pop-up restaurant in Chicago when I noticed we had left a few hours earlier than we needed it. Instead of having nothing to do, I immediately pulled up my phone notes with the details on the Kiddieland sign and the Underground Railroad memorial, both located within 30 minutes of one another.
I asked my mom if she would like to take a bit of a detour and go back down memory lane to Maywood, and she agreed. Our first stop was, of course to Maywood Park to visit the Kiddieland sign.
Melrose Park
As we entered the parking lot of Melrose Park Library, a wave of nostalgia washed over me. Memories of my dad taking us to Kiddieland when my brother and I were young came flooding back.
The vibrant colors of the sign and the whimsical characters brought an instant smile to my face. It was as if time had stood still, preserving the essence of my childhood adventures. What was even lovelier is that I was able to bring my new baby girl to this glimmer of nostalgia. And, although my dad isn’t able to be here, it was delightful to have my mom along with us.

The Power of Memories
The magic of Kiddieland lay not only in the thrilling rides but also in the small moments that became etched in our hearts. I vividly recalled the joy of riding the boats, feeling the cool breeze on my face, and the tantalizing aroma of popcorn that seemed to mingle with the water. These simple yet profound experiences shaped my perception of joy and happiness during those formative years.
Embracing Sentimental Connections
Stepping closer to the Kiddieland sign, I was overwhelmed by a deep sense of connection to my past. Memories of my dad’s laughter, the excitement in his eyes as he watched us enjoy the rides, and the warmth of his presence engulfed me.
At that moment, I realized the profound impact my father had on my life and the enduring love he showered upon us. The Kiddieland sign became a tangible symbol of those cherished moments we shared as a family.
Passing on the Legacy
As I stood before the sign, I couldn’t help but reflect on the significance of preserving memories and passing them on to future generations. Kiddieland had brought immense joy to countless children over the years, and even though the physical park was no longer there, the sign stood as a beacon, guiding visitors toward their own moments of nostalgia and wonder.
It became clear to me that memories are not confined to a specific time or place; they transcend generations, leaving a lasting imprint on the fabric of our lives.
Final Thoughts
Visiting the Kiddieland sign at the Melrose Park Library was a truly heartwarming experience, filled with laughter, gratitude, and a profound appreciation for the simple joys of childhood. This sentimental journey reminded me of the importance of holding onto cherished memories, honoring the loved ones who played a significant role in shaping our lives and passing on the legacy of joy to future generations.
The Kiddieland sign will forever be a symbol of the magic that once existed, reminding us to embrace our inner child and treasure the moments that make life truly extraordinary.
