4 Tips for a Kid Friendly Garden

We all know how important it is for our little ones to spend time outdoors. Getting plenty of exercise, enjoying fresh air and stimulating their imaginations are all part of the enjoyment of outdoor play.

Sadly, with technology being a large part of the modern world and things like social media, gaming and online videos seemingly playing an even bigger part in childhood it’s not as easy as it should be to get the kids outdoors!

I’m a firm believer that having plenty of fun memories in the garden should be a big part of any childhood! Whether that’s drawing with chalk on the patio, running through the sprinklers or defending your fort in the tree house – if you’re looking to add more trees to your outdoor space, check out The Tree Center for the latest advice and tips.

Having an outdoor space that your children can enjoy, and an outdoor space that you know is safe and secure is a positive step towards more outdoor activities! So, with this in mind I’ve come up with 4 tips for a kid friendly garden!

Have fun!

Avoid Ponds and Water Features

They look beautiful, have a calming and relaxing effect, and also provide a great habitat for wildlife. However, having a pond or water feature in your garden poses a real threat that makes your garden simply unsafe for your little ones.

Accidents can happen, whether that’s being a little too curious and toppling in or trying to retrieve a football…not to mention that ponds can also be a breeding ground for bacteria! Removing your water features is the best idea, however, you can also install a metal grid to place over your pond to prevent any potential accidents.

Install Artificial Grass

The great thing about artificial grass? The kids will have access to the garden all year round! Even if rain does stop play, the kids can be straight back outside again once it clears up. You won’t have to worry about your lawn becoming a muddy, boggy mess…or those dirty footprints left through the house! It also cushions the impact from falls and they’re less likely to trip!

Create a Designated Play Area

You want the garden to be kid friendly, but you also want to protect your sunflowers and veggies. Believe it or not, you can have the best of both worlds!

Choose an area of the garden that you can fence off, either with a low fence or even some old sleepers, surface the area with artificial grass, bark or even sand and place all their play equipment in that area.

Using Netting and Fences

Netting and fences are essential for creating a kid-friendly garden. They provide a physical barrier, protecting delicate plants and keeping children away from restricted areas. Poultry netting’s small openings allow air and sunlight to reach plants while keeping small hands and feet out.

Incorporating recycled egg cartons into gardening activities could also be a fun and educational experience. These can serve as mini planters for sowing seeds while teaching kids about recycling.

By implementing these tips, you can create a safe and engaging space for children to explore and develop a love for nature in your garden.

Give Them Their Own Plot

What better way to get the kids outside than to give them their own gardening project! Dedicate a small area or flower bed that’s just for them and help them grow whatever flowers, shrubs, herbs or veggies they wish!

Teaching your children to nurture their young plants will teach them about patience and how we get a beautiful flower from a tiny seed.
