In sticking with our $250 Wedding Series, today we are addressing an Easy DIY $10 Naked Wedding Cake. With a small budget, there should be no reason to spend so much of it on a cake when a deliciously, small cake can be made for less than $10.
After taking several Wilton cake courses in the past, I picked up on so many tips for baking cakes affordably. So, in today’s post I’m pitching the idea of creating the Pinterest trending, Naked Wedding Cake using boxed cake mix and a few tips for how to make it taste like it came from the bakery.
Naked wedding cakes are easy to make, gorgeous, and affordable. How adorable would it be for you and your significant other to take on this project together?
For example, you and your significant other could take a cake course together and make your own wedding cake together. Cake courses can be found in your area typically at community colleges and crafts stores such as JoAnn Fabric and Michaels.
What’s Needed?
To make your naked wedding cake, you will need a boxed cake mix ($1). I prefer Pillsbury Moist Supreme (white or yellow) because it tastes great and can be used for any occasion.
Gather your ingredients ($5) to prepare the cake mix based on the package instructions. However, if you would like a bakery taste follow the instructions below.
Easy Bakery Taste
To make your cake tastes like it came from the bakery, you will need to do the following:
- Add (1) more egg or (2) if you want it really rich.
- Use melted butter instead of oil, but double the amount.
- Use milk instead of water.
- Bake as directed.
Additional Cake Baking Supplies to Consider
Aside from the ingredients needed, my personal preference would be to use a mixer instead of using a spoon to mix. In addition, I would consider the size cake you plan to make and borrow cake pans accordingly.
I personally prefer the small 6 In. Wilton Cake Pans for smaller cakes such as this. I love using them and think it would make for a beautiful mini wedding cake. But, feel free to use whatever size you choose.
I would also suggest using an icing spatula or the back of a butter knife for a thin and even spread of icing. Packaged icing ($2) works well if you want to do things quickly, but if you have more time, I would suggest making a homemade icing, such as buttercream. Few ingredients are needed and they can be purchased inexpensively.
Lastly, I would use a simple Mr. & Mrs. cake topper ($2 on Oriental Trading) and/or left-over artificial flowers from the wedding bouquet to decorate the cake.
Final Thoughts
Making a deliciously, small naked wedding cake can be made for less than $10 considering you have some baking basics such as cake pans. If not, these are items that can easily be borrowed from a friend or family member.
If this is not a project that you want to take on. So be it. Enlist help from people who are close to you that enjoy baking. Just don’t forget to send them a personalized thank-you card.
