Of all the things to do in Illinois, one of the most “midwestern” things to do is to attend a sweetcorn festival. Towards the end of August and early into September, you can catch several throughout the state. This year we went to the Urbana Sweetcorn Festival in Urbana, Illinois.
While each festival offers its own unique set of activities such as music bands, mascots, food, and community vendors, one thing stays the same; the yummy and buttery sweet corn.
2018 Urbana Sweetcorn Festival
Spending Sunday evening at the Urbana Sweetcorn Festival was definitely fun and relaxing!
The boys enjoyed funnel cakes and sno cones while I opted for the beverage tent. I wanted to have a taste of India Pale Lager from Riggs Beer. I hadn’t had any since the brewery tour in January.
But, you can read more about the tour by visiting the post at Why Not Take a Tour at Riggs Beer Company?
Activities
Afterwards we spent time walking the festival and participating in a few activities from community organizations such as the Orpheum Children’s Museum, the University of Illinois’ Lab Escape, Tricoci Beauty School for face painting, and inflatables.
When we were all done with the fun, we ended our evening with a $1 ear of yummy sweet corn.
National Sweetcorn Festival
If you are planning to visit Illinois soon, you still have time to enjoy the National Sweetcorn Festival this coming weekend at McFerren Park in Hoopeston, Illinois.
Did you know?
This festival was first held in 1941 and includes a carnival, demolition derby, parade, and beauty pageant. 50 tons of sweet corn is cooked in an antique fashion and given out for free.
Who knows?
We may just see you there!
