Happy New Year! But, Who Moved My Cheese?

Happy New Year!

It’s 2018!! Can you believe it? Did you wake up yesterday ready to set a whole ton of New Year resolutions? How did that work out for you?

Do you feel empowered – like you are ultimately going to reach your goals or do you already feel defeated on “Day 2” of the “New Year”?

Well, for me. I didn’t jump up and create a ton of resolutions. Nope. I sure didn’t.

Instead, I spent a few days reflecting on 2017 and all that happened and decided to hone in on what my 2018 “cheese” was really going to be.

But, wait! Cheese? Brennon, what are you talking about?

Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson

I’m talking about the “cheese” from Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson. “Cheese” is a metaphor for whatever it is in life that you ultimately want to have and achieve.

In the story, there are four characters who represent a part of us and how we think. There are two mice, Sniff and Scurry, as well as two little people, Hem and Haw. Sniff and Scurry represent the simplicity in us (which is not a bad thing, by the way) and Hem and Haw represent the complexity in us.

Check out the video below and watch how all four characters react to change in the maze of life as they go after their own cheese.

Why, Who Moved My Cheese?

Each year, I get out my book and reread it to help me adjust to the new year ahead. This time, however, not only did I pull out the adult version of the book, I also pulled out the teen version of the book for my 12 year old son to read. No, he is not a teen, yet, but he will be. So, why not plant those seeds now?

Psst. There is also a children’s version that I’ll be grabbing for my 7 year old soon.

The story of how the characters move through the maze really gets you thinking on how you will move through the maze of life in the new year.

In addition to reading it throughout our week off, we also watched the 16 minute movie (see below) with my younger brother as we discussed the few goals that we really wanted to accomplish this year.

Did you read? Few?

Yep, that’s right! So often, I create sooo many goals, things to do, and/or resolutions that they never get done because there were just too many things to do. So, this time, I wanted to be smart about the goals I created. Therefore, after careful thought, I chose three, main personal goals and three, main blog goals.

For example, one blog goal is to only post twice per week. That’s right. No more, all over the place blogging; just twice per week. That’s it.

It’s a simple and yet, SMART (Specific. Measurable. Achievable. Relevant. Timely).  This is a goal that creates boundaries for me and those that I collaborate with and also keeps me focused on relevant content.

Ultimately, my blog is a big part of my “cheese”, therefore, I want to make sure I continue to enjoy it, progressing with it, and keep it of good quality. Wouldn’t you agree?

So, what’s your “cheese”? Email me and let me know.
