How To Set Your Child Up For Learning Success

As parents, there is much we can do to support our children with their learning. This applies to those of us who homeschool, and to those of us who send our children off to school in the morning.

Either way, there are things that we can do better so that our children have a better chance of succeeding academically.

Below are a few tips to consider for inspiration.

#1: Work according to your child’s skill levels

If you push your child too hard, they might struggle with the work you set them, and they might start to loath the learning process. And if you give your child work that is too easy for them, you will do little to challenge them, and they might never reach their fullest potential.

So, work according to your child’s skill levels, perhaps by using the following suggestions on assessing your child’s ability. Then gather the resources you need to support the learning stage they are at.

As an example, you might consider the age-appropriate books provided by Saddleback when considering your child’s reading. Check out their Hi-Lo Books for middle schoolers, for example, which have been adapted with reading levels in mind.

If these are not of interest to you, commit to research to find other learning materials that are suitable for your child, for all aspects of their curriculum.

How to Create a Minimalist Homeschool Space

#2: Create the proper learning environment for your child

For your child to learn effectively, it is important to create an environment that is set up for learning. It should be a quiet space, so find an area where there will be no noisy distractions.

Keep in mind that it needs to be an organized space, so get rid of any mess and clutter. And, make sure your child has easy access to what they need.

My last post on creating a minimalist homeschool space might be useful to you, especially if you’re on a budget.

#3: Be your child’s biggest cheerleader

When your child does something well, congratulate them. And, if they achieve a certain milestone, celebrate it with a reward. Children love being rewarded and acknowledged.

When your child starts to get frustrated with their learning, encourage them to keep trying. Be positive with them, and let them know they have what it takes to do what needs to be done.

Other things to note on learning deal with children making mistakes. If your child makes a mistake in their learning, don’t be critical of them. Let them know the world won’t fall down around their ears because they have done something wrong. Instead, help them understand their mistake, and spur them on with positivity.

I love positive affirmations! Fill your child with positive affirmations such as, “You are worthy. You are capable. You are amazing.”

When you cheer your children on in such ways, they will be less likely to give up on their learning. They should appreciate your support, with the self-esteem they need to feel better about their learning ability.

#4: Surround them with learning resources

Your child should have all the resources they need during school time, but you can provide them with those extra items that will fuel their learning after school has finished.

We are thinking about books, for example, so stock up your bookshelves with fun and interesting reading materials. Think about games too, such as these board games that are both fun and educational. Don’t limit yourself here, also consider phone apps that can stimulate their young minds.

Final Thoughts

Be creative and be flexible. Remember, you want to set your child up for learning success. With these tips in mind, you will develop a love of lifelong learning in your children.
