Indiana Dunes National Park is a hidden gem along the southern shore of Lake Michigan, offering breathtaking views, diverse ecosystems, and miles of hiking trails waiting to be explored. As we are on our journey to visit as many national parks as possible, having a quality pair of hiking shoes is very important to me. With this in mind, I want to share how my adidas TERREX Swift R3 Gore-Tex waterproof hiking shoes held up as we explored Indiana Dunes National Park.
Indiana Dunes Visitor Center
To begin our adventure at Indiana Dunes National Park, we stopped for a photo at the park sign outside the visitor center. I enjoy spending time in national park visitor centers because there is so much to explore and experience.
For example, children can pick up their Junior Ranger booklet and begin their activities toward earning their badge, which is exactly what we did. Once we had our book, we headed into the observation room to sit down and review the activities that needed to be completed. While there, my daughter enjoyed looking through various books about bugs, birds, and butterflies.
Lunch at West Beach
After browsing the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center for about an hour, we headed to West Beach based on a staff member’s recommendation. The drive from the Visitor Center to West Beach was about nine miles and took about 15 minutes to arrive.
Once we were there, I proudly provided my park pass for entrance, asked for a map, and got ourselves parked. I loaded the stroller and put on my hiking shoes. I enjoyed the trek from the parking lot to the beach pavilion.
Here’s where things got a bit challenging and I was grateful that I had on my hiking shoes. Although I chose to use the ramp to get down the dune onto the beach, a considerable amount of dune still had to be navigated and hiked down to get onto the beach.
As I pushed my jogger stroller through the sand, I was grateful for every step in my hiking shoes because I don’t think I would have been able to get down or back up had it not been for the hiking shoes.

After ending our time at West Beach, we headed to our final destination within the park for our day trip, the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair Century of Progress Homes. This district includes five homes that once embodied the bright future of American architecture and is a must-visit within the park.
Of the five homes, I would have to say that the pink one was my favorite, and I’m probably saying that because pink is my favorite color. Either way, visiting the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair Century of Progress Homes was a relaxing way to end our time at Indiana Dunes National Park.
Final Thoughts
