I Loved the Conservatory, But Here’s What You Should Know

Garfield Park Conservatory Indianapolis

After about a year of waiting, I finally made it to the Garfield Park Conservatory in Indianapolis, Indiana. It was extremely more beautiful than I had imagined. I spent much of the morning wandering aimlessly through the Sunken Garden and later returning to complete a self-guided tour indoors. I loved the Conservatory, but here’s what you should know.

Garfield Park Conservatory

First, this conservatory should not be confused with the Garfield Park Conservatory in Chicago, Illinois.

This Garfield Park Conservatory of Indianapolis has a 10,000 square foot tropical Conservatory in addition to a three-acre Sunken Garden. It is located at 2345 Pagoda Drive in the Garfield Park neighborhood district.

Sunken Garden

I walked the Sunken Garden an hour prior to the indoor Conservatory opening. Doing this is free and the traffic was also very low. I almost had the entire outdoors to myself.

There are plenty of bright green, patio table sets along with Chess and Checkers available to play while you enjoy the Gardens. There are also hammocks available to lounge in and relax. My boys are going to enjoy visiting here soon.

Once 1PM came and the Conservatory opened, it immediately got busy. There were people everywhere. So, my advice would be to decide what is important to you. If you are interested in exploring with minimal visitors consider going an hour prior to doors opening.

Indoor Admission

As I mentioned, wandering the outdoors is free, however, there is a $2 general admission fee for those wanting to take a self-guided tour through the Conservatory. Hundreds of different plants from the world’s tropics can be found within. According to the Conservatory, it has a rainforest theme with a wide variety of plant species including palms, orchids, ferns, cacao, vanilla, bananas, and coffee.

In addition to the plant life, there is an adorable Waterfall Pond, as well as interesting information about a few species of reptiles and amphibians.
