With the warm breeze of spring finally beginning to fill the air, I’m excited for my daughter and I to begin our first-ever Mommy & Me gardening and composting journey. There’s just something special about spending time outdoors learning and enjoying the art of gardening.
I remember vividly spending summers in West Virginia with my great-grandmother and aunt tending to their gardens and being able to pick vegetables that would go into that evening’s dinner.
Regardless of whether it was a deliciously tossed salad made of all garden vegetables or a spaghetti salad where spaghetti noodles replaced the lettuce. No matter what it was, it was a joy being a part of the process. Now that I have a daughter, we have begun our own composting and gardening journey this spring with the helping hand of the Luma Electric Kitchen Composter.

While we were not as tech-savvy back in the 90s to have an electric kitchen composter, I am grateful for the opportunity to teach my daughter how to be a bit more efficient using modern-day technology such as the Luma Electric Kitchen Composter.
For example, with the Luma Electric Kitchen Composter, we can repurpose our food scraps into compost in as little as 3-6 hours which is significantly down from the 3-6 months that it would take using traditional methods from back in the 90s. Tell me technology isn’t a game changer!
In fact, we compiled our compost one day, added the scraps into the composter on the second day, and the next morning, our compost was ready to be placed into our mini garden.
With all of this being said, the Luma Electric Kitchen Composter is an all-in-one solution for sustainable kitchen waste management. This electric countertop composter efficiently transforms food scraps into nutrient-rich compost, perfect for enriching the soil health of our salsa garden and promoting eco-friendly gardening practices that my daughter can learn and enjoy.

Toddler-Friendly Composting with Luma
To foster her learning, we have set the composter near our patio salsa garden. While it does fit seamlessly into our kitchen, placing it near our colorful salsa garden and composting it right there makes it more of a teaching and learning moment. The composter’s compact and convenient size encourages use anywhere provided an electrical socket is available.
Not only this, but it has a simple one-touch operation, a clear view window, and is odorless which easily allows my daughter to participate in the process of composting without any unpleasant smells due to the active carbon filtration. She can also look directly into the composter and watch the magic happen.

To use the composter, we simply place our food scraps such as fruit and vegetable scraps and eggshells in the machine which holds 2.5 liters. In this batch, I also added a few flowers that had dried up on the dining room table. Once you have your scraps in, you simply allow the composter to work its magic.
The powerful blade grinds the scraps by up to 90% of its original volume which accelerates the composting process, turning our kitchen waste into valuable and healthy fertilizer for our salsa garden, flowers, and plants in such a short time.
Compost Maturity and Clean Up
What we have learned over the past few weeks from our Mommy & Me gardening and composting journey is that as our compost matures, we’re not just feeding our garden, we are feeding ourselves. It’s a tangible way to show my daughter the importance of reducing waste, giving back to the environment, and fueling ourselves with healthy home-grown foods.
Finally, clean up is very easy with its removable bucket that has a nonstick coating and is easy to clean and dishwasher-safe.

What’s to Come
Continue to follow our gardening journey on TikTok and the blog. We are just getting started and have so much more work to do. Over the next few weeks, we will be adding the hummingbird feeder and bird feeder, signs for each plant and flower, decorative signage, a toddler pool, and swapping out the chairs for a mini bistro set.
