1 – Education and certification

The first step in getting most careers is having a formal education in the field. However, while a specific degree isn’t required, training and certification are essential to become a life coach. These give you the skills and credibility you need to help your clients effectively.

Certifications show your clients that you’re serious about your role and have the skills to back it up. The main organizations that certify life coaches are the International Coach Federation (ICF), the European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC), and the Center for Credentialing & Education (CCE). 

One specific certification you might consider is the Myers Briggs Type Indicator MBTI certification. This can be a valuable tool in your coaching practice, allowing you to help clients understand their personality types and how these can influence their life and work choices.

2 – Get experience

Before you can get a steady stream of clients, you need to build up your experience. 

First, think about volunteering. There are many places like schools or organizations that would be happy to have someone volunteer to coach their people. This is a good way to help out in your community and practice at the same time.

Another good idea is peer coaching. This means you and another person who is learning to be a life coach can practice by coaching each other.

You can also look for internships. Working as an intern with an experienced life coach or a coaching company can give you a real look at what life coaching is all about. It’s also a great way to meet people who are already working as coaches.

3 – Set up your business

Once you have some experience to hang your hat on, you need to set up a business so you can grow an income. 

Working alone means you have more control over your work and can build your business just the way you want. However, it also means you need to find your clients and handle all the business details yourself. 

No matter if you work alone or with an organization, you need to register your business according to the laws where you live. This might mean setting up a specific type of company, like a sole proprietorship or a limited liability company (LLC).
