Black History Month Bookshelf for Little Girls

I scrolled through Pinterest looking at cute bookshelf displays for Valentine’s Day to recreate for our daughter with her adorable Valentine’s Day books. After getting some ideas, I put in a search for “Black History Month Bookshelves” hoping to see some beautifully curated bookshelf displays celebrating the contributions made by African Americans.

Sadly, I got nothing. Am I surprised? No. I continued to scroll and ended up coming across a pin that linked to a post, Children’s Books to Read During Black History Month which was a nice list of books that we currently have because I believe our history should be taught not only during Black History Month but continuously.

Now, I am not saying that anyone hasn’t created it. I am only saying that I didn’t see much at all.

From that, I decided that it was up to me to curate a beautiful Black History Month Bookshelf for little girls like our daughter.

Our bookshelf includes the following 12 books…

Full, Full, Full of Love

Peekaboo Morning

Skin Like Mine

One Love

Lola at the Library

Follow Your Dreams, Little One

The Adventures of Princess Amina The Melanin Mermaid

Tell Me a Story, Mama

Count to Love

Ambitious Girl (Ambitious Girl, 2)

Black Girl Magic: A Poem

Psalm 23 (Master Illustrator Series, The)

Finishing Touches

Now that you have your bases such as your shelves and your main ingredient (the books). It’s now time to add some finishing touches such as bows, flowers, stuffed animals, small toys, dolls, etc. to give the shelf an even more festive look.

Since I wanted the focus to be on the books, I opted for only placing an Orijin Bees Curly Swizzy Bee beside the shelves along with a stand of garland. However, I am thinking about placing our new Rosa Parks Barbie from the Inspiring Women Series beside it, as well.

Final Thoughts

So, what do you think? With just a few simple items and a bit of creativity, you can create a Pinterest-worthy Black History Month bookshelf for your little one. Not only is it adorable, but it also helps encourage reading at an early age.
