How To Look After Colored Hair

How To Look After Colored Hair

As the summer began, I knew I wanted a bit of change, so I opted for coloring my hair. I hadn’t had a new hair color in quite some time, so looking after it and treating it properly came with a lot of trial and error. From this experience, I want to share some tips on how to treat your new hair color right, make it last longer, and keep the shine.

Use the Right Shampoo

While this seems like a no-brainer. It’s not. Shampoo is the first priority when it comes to treating and maintaining colored hair. The wrong shampoos can change the tone of your hair and make it fade much quicker than it should.

Finding the right shampoo for color treated hair means looking for one without sulfates, as these can strip the hair and cause the color to fade quicker than it should.

You can also consider alternating with dry shampoos.

Use Proper Hair Masks

Taking care of your hair is like taking care of your skin, it needs a good mask every so often to restore it back to good health. The more regularly you do hair masks, the healthier your hair will be. When hair is nourished and not stripped of its natural oils, it will stay glossy and fresh just like the salon finish.

A good mask will help nourish your scalp as well as the ends of your hair. Some good at-home hair masks to make and try to save colored hair include:

  • Coconut oil, honey, and cinnamon: this will prevent dry hair and the natural ingredients will not strip the color.
  • Avocado and coconut milk: this is great for nourishing the scalp and preventing fast fading.

Try to do a mask once a week if possible to maintain good hair health. You can also consider good leave-in conditioners or hot oil treatments, as additional treatment options. Both will make your color stay longer and also make your hair feel and look super healthy.

Avoid Washing Too Often

Yes, you want to make sure your hair is clean, but the more you wash your hair, the quicker the color will fade. Avoid washing your hair every day at all costs.

Also, consider this, if you use a semi-permanent dye that is supposed to last 3 months, you will half that time if you wash your hair every day.

Washing your hair once or twice a week is enough. It will avoid the color fading too quickly and also ensure that you maintain its natural oils.

Invest in a Great Conditioner

After washing your hair, it is always a good idea to use a conditioner. Like shampoo, you will want to ensure that it is color protecting and sulfate-free. This will ensure that the color isn’t stripped from your hair when you are washing it.

Avoid Too Much Heat

Too much heat is not good for any hair, colored or not. The more heat you use on your hair, the drier it will become. Avoiding heat altogether is great, as it means your hair can maintain its natural health and not experience heat damage.

But, if you do like to use heat to style your hair, avoid using the heat tools every day. If you choose to, look into a protective product to prevent the heat from damaging the hair so much.

Use a Hat in the Sun

Like heat tools, the heat from the sun can also dry out your hair, which will make the color fade quicker. I wore a straw hat the entire summer on most days so that the sun’s harsh UV rays wouldn’t dry out the new color and also to keep my face protected from the sun.
