I Finally Took an Online Brewing Course! Here’s Why!

If you have been around the blog awhile, I’ve shared my interest in beer, brewery toursand tastings. Well, each time I visit a brewery or do a tasting, my interest is always sparked a little bit more. With that being said, I recently decided to take an online brewery course to teach me how to make my own homemade batch of beer! How fun! Not only that, it is a great date type thing to do.

Udemy Brew Real Beer

When I decided that I wanted to take an online course, my first thought was Groupon because I have taken other online courses from there at a significantly discounted price. After crawling the site, I couldn’t find a class that I was interested in. I stopped my search and hit a quick Google search and came across a quick class on Udemy called Brew Real Beer.

Since, I had taken other courses on the site, I was familiar with the format, so I knew I wouldn’t mind. On top of that, the course was free! BINGO!

I enrolled in the course and over two sit downs completed it.

Keep in mind that this course is for the beginning brewer with minimal knowledge of beer brewing.

What I Learned

In about an hour, I learned the 4 main ingredients to brewing your own beer. These four ingredients include (boiled) water (but, don’t use distilled water), fermentable sugar such as malted barley, hops, and brewing yeast. For heaven’s sake, don’t get baking yeast!

After learning about the major ingredients to use, the next topic covered was beer equipment needed. Whew. Thank goodness a downloaded checklist was included. From there, a beer kit and it’s ingredients were discussed.

From there we transitioned into how to actually brew a batch of beer. Whoohoo!

Final Thoughts

So, let me just keep it real about this process. First, I appreciate that the presenter, Ted Esler shares his entire process about the  basics of home brewing for free in less than 2 hours. The whole process seems really cool. But, to be truthful, I am not going to do all of the things it takes to complete this project.

For me, I simply want an easy at home brewing kit that I can grab online for about $50 such as the one I’ve listed. But, if you have time and you are really up for making your own batch, go for it!

What are your thoughts?
