With my teen boys getting older and having their schedules filled with school, friends, and extra-curricular activities, we don’t spend huge chunks of time together often. With this being said, I decided to set some time aside and create a fun night of painting with my youngest son. But, I couldn’t leave out my toddler daughter.
So, for my son and I, we used two painting kits from Paint with Number and I grabbed a dollar store kit for my toddler to keep her busy and feeling just as involved. She loved it! Feel free to check out the video on TikTok or Instagram.

Before I jump into the details of the evening, which led to morning, let’s chat a bit about Paint with Number. I chose the Dog Smoking a Cigar in the size 40×50 and framed for my son, and for myself, I chose the Flower Head Deer in the size 40×50 and framed. I intentionally chose the least amount of difficulty because I wanted our experience to be enjoyable and completed by the end of the night.
While having it completed by the end of the night was my vision, it didn’t necessarily work out that way. I ended up getting really involved in the painting and painted well into the night after my son had called it quits.
He decided that this was a project that he wanted to accomplish over the course of a few weekends. For me, I wanted to see the outcome immediately. But, not only that, it was so soothing to sit, relax, and slow down which is nothing something I do much of nowadays.
What to Expect in Kits
Kits come with a high-quality rolled canvas, three varying-sized paint brushes (small, medium, large), and a non-toxic, eco-friendly acrylic-based paint set. It’s everything that you need to complete your masterpiece. However, I would encourage you to have your own set of paint brushes in varying sizes because once you get to painting, you may find that you prefer a different shape or size brush like I did.
Each canvas has numbered sections that match the paint pods that you need. You will need to place the numbered stickers on each paint pod before beginning. It’s also important to note that if you want more ease in the painting, it’s a good rule of thumb to choose a larger canvas.
After painting for about an hour or so past my son, I called it quits for the evening but got up the next morning and finished. Once I was done, I used a metallic marker to make a few accents and scripted my initials in the corner of the canvas.
Other Options
What I appreciate about Paint with Number is that if you don’t find an image that you enjoy, you have the option to have something customized to your liking such as your portrait. How incredible is that?
For those interested in a custom photo painting, instructions are listed online and are easy to follow. If you choose this option, you are likely to have some additional wait time in terms of delivery; which is to be expected since it is a custom piece.
Final Thoughts
While I have done paint-by-number paintings alone, I have not had a shared experience with anyone else until this experience with my children. It was such a nice and relaxing activity to participate in together. We enjoyed snacks and drinks, talked, and painted.
