Simple DIY Jobs To Learn As A Homeowner

When you buy a new home for the first time it can feel like you are suddenly on top of the world. Being able to call a place your own and have control over it is something that is always welcomed and a stage we all get to at some point in our adult lives.

However, no one ever trains us to be a homeowner. There’s typically no cleaning or Handyman crash course that we can take before we get the keys for our home and this can leave us confused at the prospect of decorating and caring for a real-life home.

This is why today we have a quick list of the skills you need to learn to do as soon as you get a home to make the homeowner process much easier.

Painting

Painting might sound like a weird thing to put on a list like this, but if you have never tried to paint a wall before, it is a lot different to painting on paper. Make sure when painting that you always use the same stroke direction and never do the coat too thick first time. Add tape to the edges or get yourself a small paint brush so that you don’t go over.

Wallpapering

Yes, people still use wallpaper! Wallpapering isn’t a fun job. It can be very messy, tiring and a little confusing too. Ideally, two people are needed for a wallpapering job, and this will make life much easier for you.

The first line is easy and you simply need to place the strip on the wall and draw a line where you need to cut it. When you have patterned paper it can get a little more confusing.

Make sure to line up the design and cut both the top and bottom of the strip to fit the wall. Never mix your paste too thin, and always use a credit card or scraper to remove air bubbles when applying.

Pruning

If you have a garden you will need to learn how to prune your shrubs and trees to keep them healthy. For this, you will need a good strong pair of shears, and you will need to cut the wood just above where new leaves are growing.

When you see buds or widening in the branches this is where leaves will form and you always want to cut just above this. You can cut pretty harshly with many shrubs and trees and cut them half their size, and this will help them grow back thicker and healthier.

Roofing

Tiling the roof is something you might expect the pros to do but you can often make small fixes yourself. When fitting the shingle to the roof always make sure to layer it over the tile underneath, and under the tile above because this allows the rain to fall away from your home.

Wiring

Everyone needs to know the basics of wiring and you should know how to wire a plug. There are 3 different wires which will have different colors depending on the country you live in, so make sure to look this up and know which is live and which is earth because you don’t want to mix these up!

Locksmithing

Finally, you’ll want to know how to change your locks as needed, using only the best supplies. CLK Supplies provides lock and key supplies to the locksmithing industry to ensure that you are in good hands.
