Updated 3.14.22 with real photos! I’ll be updating this post throughout the week to help you with inspiration!
Spring Break is almost near. I love a great spring break with the boys! However, the weather is usually never warm enough in the Midwest to do warm-weather activities. And, if we do, it’s almost always with a coat or jacket in tow.
While I’ve posted some Spring Break travels over the years on the blog, it’s been a long while since I’ve posted a Spring Break Staycation. In fact, the last one may have been the first one in 2015.
Check out our 2015 Spring Break Staycation Happenings!
The boys have grown a great deal since then, so planning our staycation this year got pretty interesting for me trying to plan activities for a middle schooler and a high schooler that they would both enjoy.

So after searching local and nearby calendars of events and Groupon, I came up with a pretty cool week of staycation happenings, along with an “overnight vacation” in Indianapolis. Adding just one day away was a great way to break up the staycation and give the ending to Spring Break, a bang! It also keeps us within a reasonable budget.
So, without further adieu, let’s jump into what the week is planned to look like.
Cameras Loaded
Before we jump into what’s planned, let’s talk a bit about some of the prep. Since the boys have been on me about printing their photos and making albums, I have given them the responsibility of taking photos throughout their Spring Break.
I am loading up the Canon IVY CLIQ cameras, along with the Polaroid Snap and SPLIT cam so that they can take instant photos in addition to whatever they take on their phones and I take.
I also grabbed a few fun-looking 4×6 photo albums for them to make Spring Break Albums with their photos and any keepsakes gathered along the way.
Update 3.14.22
The boys have informed me that I picked out terrible designs for the photo albums and that they both wanted the pink paint splash one. So, I’ll be headed out to grab another one of those.
What do you think about the designs?
Monday – Kick-Off
To start Spring Break off, we will have an evening of UNO, paired with hamburgers and fries, and topped off with Fish Bowl drinks. Several years ago, we made adult Fish Bowls and they were a huge hit at one of my birthday parties.
This time, I was able to find kid-friendly Fish Bowls on Pinterest which consists of Blue Gatorade, Sprite, Nerds, and Swedish Fish. I also grabbed fish bowls and Krazy Straws from Dollar Tree to give the kids the full fun experience. See below.

Tuesday
On Tuesday, the day is planned to be pretty chill. We simply plan to go out for ice cream in the evening after dinner. There are a lot of ice cream shops around here that we haven’t tried, so they have already picked out one that we plan to visit.
Going out for ice cream is one of those fun family outings that don’t tear up your budget. It will be fun for me to grab a photo and compare it to the one in 2015 (shown below) when we were out having ice cream, as well.
Wednesday
On Wednesday, the plan is to have an indoor picnic for dinner. I’ve already decided on the theme and have everything we need for that. In fact, I’ll actually be recreating a summer tablescape from this past summer.
We plan to have a typical picnic-style menu consisting of sandwiches, chips, pasta salad, a dessert, and lemonade in a pineapple drink dispenser.
After we are done eating, our activity is to make Summer Bucket Lists (this past post has a free printable). We’ve always enjoyed creating seasonal bucket lists, vision boards, etc. So, while they are still interested, why not continue?
I also think that once I tell my son he can invite his girlfriend over, he’ll be even more excited to participate in everything.
Thursday
On Thursday, the plans will be pretty chill. I’ve planned a spa/self-care evening. Where we will mask our faces, whiten our teeth, and have a fun bath and shower bombs available. It’s also the evening to pack and get ready for our night away.
We keep a stash of various face masks and bath and shower bombs, so we won’t have to go out and get anything. However, I may do a quick store prowl for some fun bath and shower bombs.
And, lastly, the guys use teeth whitening strips and have plenty left so they can use those, and I can use my Smile Brilliant teeth whitening system.
By having a more relaxing evening, I can get some rest before we take off on our overnight vacation.

Friday Fun
For Friday, we are heading to a nearby city for some virtual reality and a few rounds of paintball. Now, let’s get this straight. I will not be participating in any paintball. LOL. I can handle virtual reality, but there is no way those boys are gonna come for me in any paintball game. Hahaha.
After all of that, I am sure we will all be ready for some rest, so we will head to our room to check-in and chill out. When they are ready they can spend time in the pool and we can order pizza for dinner. All of which they enjoy a great deal.
Saturday
On Saturday, we will sleep in, have breakfast at a nice restaurant, and then head home where the boys have plans at a local recreation spot. And, while they are there, I’ll happily grab myself a much-needed nap until it’s time for them to pick them up.
Sunday
On Sunday, I’m sure we will all be worn out. So, I’ve grabbed some popcorn and cute popcorn bags that I’ll place beside the microwave for everyone to chill out and watch movies, together or on their own. However, they choose.

Final Thoughts
So, there you have it! Our Spring Break plans with a mix of staycation happenings and an overnight trip away. Since I am posting this in the planning phase, Idon;t have much to share in terms of photos. So, if you would like an update on when things really happen, just let me know. But, I’m sure I’ll just update this post with the actual happenings.
What are your plans for Spring Break? Do you have major travel plans or staying local with a staycation?
P.S. I know this post is pretty pink to be about boys, but by the time we actually move through the week, I’ll have plenty of other colors and expressions to share – that will not be pink. I guarantee.
