Tips That I’ve Learned on How to Organize Your Household Move

Moving can be a big deal for everyone. From packing in an organized way to knowing which items to let go of beforehand, there is a lot that needs to get addressed. With this in mind, it can be overwhelming to juggle all of these tasks without a solid plan to help guide you in the process. Wouldn’t you agree?

With all of this in mind, I have created a quick list of tips with some of the most valuable things that I have learned over the course of several moves, including moving from city to city and state to state.

1 – Designate Boxes to Rooms

While it is unlikely that you will rely on one box alone to pack up everything in one room, by designating one box to each room and labeling it as such, you are setting yourself up to divide your belongings per room.

When you do this, you eliminate the possibility of things from different rooms mixing, potentially causing you to have difficulty locating items once you’ve moved and are ready to unpack.

For many of us, one box won’t be enough for one room, so you’ll likely continue to add boxes as needed. Remember, that each box contains only the items that go with the room labeled. Nothing else.

2 – Use Vacuum Sealed Storage Bags

The next thing that I have found to make moving a lot more manageable is to use vacuum-sealed storage bags. These are really quite simple to use. You simply pack what you need inside of them, zip or seal them, and then suction the air out.

These work great to organize and store your softer items such as clothes, blankets, pillows, towels, etc. Additionally, it keeps your softer items cleaner and tidier than other methods would.

3 – Make Things Easier

To take more stress off of your shoulders, try and find ways to make moving day fun. As an example, you may want to reward your children with an allowance for helping you pack, conduct house packing races to see how fast everyone can fill up a moving box, or plan to celebrate your hard work after packing.

4 – Hire Movers If Possible

Next, if your budget allows, consider hiring movers to help. This alone will take so much stress and pressure off of yourself, as well as your family.

You shouldn’t have to take endless trips to make the move a success, so hiring professionals to bear some of the weight will take away some of the stress. Get help using companies such as JC Movers & Lumper Service Inc and Chicago labor movers to make your move more efficient and convenient.

5 – Organize By Belongings Instead of By Room

An alternative for organizing my room is to organize by belongings. Instead of labeling boxes per room, label them by the kind of item. For example, one box can be labeled “shoes” and another “kitchen supplies.”

The approach you take to organizing and packing up your things should be structured but not tedious enough that you’re totally exhausted by the process.

When you go through your things item by item, you may find some moving inspiration as you feel compelled to let go of items you no longer want or need. Decluttering can be an enjoyable part of the moving process, so make the most of it when you can.

6 – Don’t Procrastinate! Pack Ahead of Time

The final tip that I have learned along the way is to not procrastinate. Do not wait until the last minute to pack up your things. It will feel overwhelming trying to box up everything you own right before the move. Look at your calendar and start packing up gradually about three to four weeks in advance. This way, you won’t be left scrambling, can stay organized, and have peace of mind.

Final Thoughts

Organizing your household move is about proper packing and proper timing. Wouldn’t you agree that the best way to avoid the stress of packing last minute is not to do it? Keep these tips in mind to stay on top of your move and away from unnecessary stress.
