A Fun Summer, Sunflower, Sunday Decision

While scrolling through NewsBreak, an article on a beautiful sunflower field caught my attention. When I went to read the article, I noticed it was closer than expected. With “Visit a Sunflower Field” being on my Summer Bucket List, I knew that a Sunday day trip was in order.

Clearview Farm Sunflower Field and Maze

The Sunflower Field and Maze is a new addition to Clearview Farm located at 3501 N. Mattis Ave., in Champaign, IL. While this is the address given, this is not where the sunflowers are located.

At the intersection of Mattis Ave. and W. Olympian Dr., you’ll take Olympian Dr. to Legacy Ave. Legacy Ave. takes you right to the Sunflower Field.

When I arrived, I was amazed at how many sunflowers there actually were. According to a recent story by WCIA,  “nearly 500,000 sunflowers are blooming at Clearview Farm’s 25 acre sunflower field in Champaign”. The story continued to explain that the farmers planted the flowers on May 1st.

A Note on Sunflowers

April and May are the best times to sow sunflower seeds to achieve a beautiful sunflower field like this in late July and early August. However, you can still sow sunflower seeds in the summer for a beautiful fall crop, as well.

If you are unfamiliar with sunflowers, they come in varying heights ranging from less than one foot to 10 feet tall at times. In addition to this, they also come in a wide range of flower colors such as burgundy and orange, aside from the popular bright yellow.

In addition to the Sunflower Field and Maze being a beautiful sight to see, it is also free.

When I arrived there were several families walking through the barn patterned maze, jumping over mud puddles, and admiring the sunflowers from afar. The entrance to the maze is marked with a sign that is easily identifiable. There are also signs throughout the maze.

It’s important to note that with the heavy rains the night prior, the ground was pretty muddy. Thankfully many of us had wipes and paper towels in our vehicles to clean our feet and shoes before loading up and ending our time at the farm.

With this in mind, wear shoes that you don’t mind getting messy. Additionally, don’t forget to bring some paper towels and wet wipes for an easy clean up.

A Few Words on Sun Safety

Lastly, I want to make mention that the weather can be hot, so if you plan on completing the maze or staying out for a considerable amount of time in the sun, be sure to protect yourself.

Hydration is key. So, don’t forget to bring a bottle of water, or have some ready in your car. You may also want to consider wearing a broad hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.

Final Thoughts

If you love sunflowers and want the perfect pics, or are just curious to see how tall they can actually get, add Clearview Farm’s Sunflower Field and Maze to your Summer Bucket List Before it’s too late!
