Making Tomato Sauce: Here’s What You’ll Need

There’s nothing quite like homemade tomato sauce! Whether you plan on dousing it over pasta or even using it as a dipping sauce for fresh focaccia bread, you can count on tomato sauce to add that extra oomph to make your dish or side a five-star bite to eat.

Want to make tomato sauce at home? You’ll be surprised to see just how easy and quick it is to make. Read on to see what ingredients and tools you’ll need to whip up this delicious concoction in your very own kitchen.

Whole Peeled Tomatoes

For servings for roughly two people, you’ll need about 10 whole, peeled tomatoes. This should be equivalent to about two pounds. You can go for a 28 oz canned option that is already peeled (some of them have added sugar, so keep this in mind), or you can buy them fresh and peel them yourself.

Garlic

We recommend using about three or four minced garlic gloves for this recipe, but feel free to add more if you love a more garlick-y taste. You’re also welcome to use garlic powder to taste if fresh garlic isn’t an option for you.

Fresh Basil

Basil really adds a sweet, earthy element to tomato sauce and is truly an essential. Don’t have fresh basil? You can use a teaspoon of dried basil in replacement.

Seasoning

You should have all the seasoning you need in your pantry: salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, and if you want a bit of heat, some red pepper flakes.

One teaspoon of Italian seasoning and salt & pepper to taste should truly be all the seasoning you need to make a great tomato sauce.

If you don’t have italian seasoning, you can make your own for this recipe with dried basil, dried thyme, dried rosemary, dried oregano, and/or dried marjoram. There are different variations of this common seasoning blend. Some also include dried sage, dried fennel, onion powder, salt, dried parsley, etc.

Pot & Immersion Blender

Place all your ingredients in a medium-sized pot over medium heat. You don’t want to put the heat on too high; burnt tomatoes don’t taste or smell good!

Once you notice your tomatoes getting softed, mash them into smaller bits. Bring the sauce to a boil where you’ll then simmer it on low heat for roughly 20 minutes.

After the ingredients are finished simmering, remove the sauce from the heat, and use an Immersion Blender to get your tomato sauce to a nice, smooth consistency.

Then it’s time to dive right in (or can it up for future use)! Tomato sauce is good for about five to seven days, or you can pop it in the freezer to keep it fresh for longer.

Conclusion

Making tomato sauce at home is so easy, breezy. The best part is, it’s so delicious and worth the time spent making it. It’s also incredibly versatile. Play around with different seasonings, and consider adding different ingredients from the above list such as bay leaves or olive oil. So, what are you waiting for? Go whip up some homemade tomato sauce!
