Tips for Following Through with Goals

Goals

The holidays are over and the new year has settled in. Not to mention that the second Saturday in January is National Vision Board Day. National Vision Board Day encourages us to set our goals in a visual way. This is such a great manifestation tool, especially for those who are creative.

With this being said, let me ask you a question.

How are your resolutions coming along? Most of us typically forget we even had goals in mind once the holiday dust settles a week or so into January. But just because you didn’t get going on a resolution exactly on January 1 doesn’t mean that you can’t set a personal goal right now to make changes for the rest of the year.

To make any goal come to life, you have to be in the right mindset, take defined small steps, and set up a support system to keep you accountable along the way. Below, I’ve compiled a few tips to have your most productive and goal crushing year yet!

Goals

Mindset

Your mindset is everything.

If you are someone who has always had trouble following through with goals, it’s time to take a deep assessment of your mindset. Do you have doubts and fear holding you back? You must truly believe that you can accomplish your goal in order to see it through.

Get in the right mindset by reminding yourself of your goal every day. You can find a quote on Pinterest that reminds you of your goal and set it as your home screen or you can write it out on your vision board that you read when you wake up each morning.

Once you have steps in place to remind yourself of your goal throughout the day, begin practicing visualization when you think about your goal. Using visualization involves really thinking about what your life would look and feel like once you achieve this goal.

For example, if your 2020 goal is to lose weight, start visualizing what you will feel like throughout the day with better overall health. This way, you can start taking the necessary steps to reach your vision.

Small Steps

Once you’ve set a concrete goal, the next step is to break it down into smaller, actionable chunks. Trying to reach a goal without coming up with a step-by-step plan is like trying to drive across the country without looking at a map. You can head in the right direction for a little while, but eventually, you’re going to get lost and discouraged.

If your goal is to start your own business in 2020, for example, start by setting a date that you would like to launch your business by and work from there. Next, you’ll want to think of your company name and come up with a complete list of products or services you’ll offer. Then, you may want to come up with a business plan and find someone to help you design a logo, and so on. You might even want to supply some surveys to potential customers (find more information here) to learn more about how to market your product or business. Set due dates for each action step to keep yourself on track.

However, it’s important to remember to not beat yourself up if you don’t hit every due date. The point of having detailed action steps is to keep you moving forward. Give yourself patience and grace if you have to set due dates back. Then set a new date and keep going.

Create a Support System

Don’t keep your goals to yourself. There are plenty of people out there who are embarking on a similar journey. If your goal is to lose weight in 2020, but don’t know where to start, find a weight loss program with an established community that you can join to help guide, motivate and educate you on nutrition and physical fitness.

Or, if your goal is to start a business, find a trusted, like-minded person to go into business with or search your area for meetups geared towards female entrepreneurship.

Final Thoughts

Don’t let 2020 slip by. You have everything it takes to make this year different. All it takes is truly believing you can achieve your goals, feeling great about what you are working towards, planning small action steps to get there, and letting go of the notion that you have to do this on your own.

You’ve got this! You really do.
