Some years back, I wrote a post, A Weekend Camping in Arizona: Your Packing Checklist, and in that post I listed a number of items you should bring while camping. The list included emergency communication such as walkie talkies because if you have been camping, you know that oftentimes, your cell phone doesn’t work or you may simply choose to not communicate using your cell phone while you are relaxing and enjoying your camping trip. For this reason, it is important to have a reliable set of walkie talkies.

First Impressions
When the package first came and I saw the box, I thought that the walkies talkies would be more for play than for actual long range communication. But, after testing them out, I can honestly say that I was wrong.
The walkie talkies actually provide long range communication and clear sound, which I explained on my Instagram post earlier in the week. I also did some short video clips in my IG stories – which can be found in my Collab Highlights, so that people could hear how loud and clear the sound actually is.
What’s in the box?
What I didn’t explain in the Instagram post was the contents of the package. Below is a list of contents included in the box.
- (2) Walkie Talkies
- (2) Adjustable Lanyards
- Batteries
- Charger
- Charger Cord
- Walkie Talkie User Guide
Setting Up the Walking Talkies
My son and I initially set up the walkie talkies together. Each step was very simple. We first unpackaged everything. Next, we unclipped the belt clip and inserted the batteries. Afterwards, I added the adjustable lanyard to mine because he didn’t want the lanyard on his. That was it!
Once the batteries were in and we turned them on, we could immediately begin using them without having to set up any of the channels or privacy codes.
Uses for Walkie Talkies
While we intend to use these walkie talkies for camping, we used them earlier in the week for a walk at our local boardwalk. The local boardwalk is a 950 feet floating boardwalk and they worked great. We’ve also been using them in our house. My room is downstairs, so we have been using the walkie talkies to communicate throughout the house, as well.
Although we have only used them in a few situations, these walkie talkies would be great for hiking, biking, camping and road trips, as well as vacationing on a cruise ship.
Walkie Talkie Features
While I won’t go into all the features of the walkie talkies, I do want to point out some important features, so that you understand just how functional and well made these walkie talkies are.
Some features include the following:
- 22 Channels
- 10 Channel NOAA AII
- Weather Alert
- 121 Privacy Codes
- Backlit LCD Display
- Call Alert
- Belt Clip
- Battery/Power Saver
- Roger Beep
- Low Battery Alert
It’s also important to note that you can choose your color, as the walkie talkies come in several colors such as blue, green, and silver. We chose blue.
Final Thoughts
We have not yet mastered and learned how to use all of the functions just yet but we are working on it. What I can tell you is that so far, all functions have been very easy to use. My nine year old is having no challenges with using these at all.
Over the next few days, we will be learning how to appropriately use the channels and privacy codes. I think this is a very important aspect to use for safety reasons.
I started using the User Guide as I set up the walkie talkies, so I am certain that I can continue using the User Guide to help us to further understand how to set the CTSS and DCS Privacy Codes. If I get stuck, I’m sure there are multiple Youtube videos available that will easily walk me through setting up the channels and codes.
Lastly, I am excited to have these walkie talkies because there is nothing scarier than going camping and not being able to communicate, especially if you let your children roam around the campground a little bit. I’m sure that you’ll agree.
