Come and Have a Peek: An Average Day in My Life

Winter Blues

Sometimes I get so caught up in to providing helpful information on this blog, that I get away from the posts that allow you to get to know me more and connect with me a little more. So, today, I’ve giving you a glimpse into an average day in my life (when we are not travelling).

Morning Routine

In the morning, I can’t help but to hit the snooze button a few times. I know that well-known thought leaders and billionaires say that this is a bad habit because you aren’t prepared for the day. But, let me tell you – with two active boys and how my life lately has been…hitting snooze has become a way of life. And, I am still productive throughout the day.

Once we are all up and ready, everyone grabs a morning snack and heads out the door – unless I need blog photos for a particular post. If I do, I spend about 15 minutes taking a series of photos outdoors when the lighting is the best and I am freshly dressed for the day.

Once that is done, my youngest son is dropped off to school and I then head to work where I am an Academic Advisor at a community college.

My work day usually starts with me talking to everyone in the department and making my morning cup of coffee.

Once I am settled in, I check my planner, all of my email accounts and then begin reaching out to students via calls and emails checking on the status of various tasks I have given them to complete to move forward successfully while in college.

Each student is in a different stage of their journey, so typically each correspondence is very different. I may be working with two students transferring to different universities while I am working with two incoming freshman on test-taking and study skills, all while working with a few non-traditional students on securing additional scholarship funding for their final semester at the college.

Power Hour

After that I typically take my lunch at noon. Noon is my Power Hour. During this time, I make things happen. If I am not instructing Success in College, I am using the time to network for my blog, write blog posts, or schedule blog posts. If there is no work to be done concerning my blog, I use the hour to run errands. Eventually, I would like to get to the point where I actually use the time to workout. I’m just not in that space right now. And, somewhere in between all of the madness, I grab a bite to eat; typically something that I brought with me to work.

Afternoon Routine

Once the afternoon hits, my energy is usually moving down hill – which would be a great time to take my vitamins. So, I take the time to respond to emails, write blog posts for our department’s blog, create flyers for upcoming events, and work on other duties that I have such as entering in our daily data and writing out detailed notes for student files. Meetings are also typically held in the afternoon, so I participate in those.

Evening Routine

By the time, I leave work, I really just want to go home and relax. But, what I really do is pick the boys up from their afterschool program, listen to their daily happenings and head home. Once we are home, I am getting out of my work clothes and getting dinner going.

When I am prepared (which is rarely), the crock pot is going and it  already has something in it and is ready to be eaten. On other more typical days, I have an idea as to what we are eating and can go in the kitchen and get to work. But, there are many days where I am like – “Geeez, it doesn’t look like I planned much, what would you like me to run out and grab?” To be honest, there are a lot of days like that. What can I say? This is our family lifestyle.

I am the type to have a beautiful tablescape ready to go on the dinner table and end up serving quick nachos with lemonade in wine glasses or breakfast food because it’s quick and easy. It often goes down like this, but no one ever complains. My boys are really down to earth. They say things like, “Mom, everything and every day doesn’t have to be perfect.” I appreciate them so much.

After dinner, it’s a rush of homework, them playing their video games or going in the back to play basketball (if soccer is not in season), laying out clothes for the next day, showers, random discussions, and bed for them.

Once they are settled in bed, I like to take about 45 minutes to either read, listen to crystal healing meditation music on Youtube, light my candles and sage, and/or journal in one of my many notebooks and shower before I hit the bed.

Randomness

Me watching tv is something that rarely ever happens. There is simply no room in my life for the television – unless, we are out travelling and the room or cabin that we are in have a television. Then I can sit back and watch something. But, again, that’s rare.

A lot of days, you can catch me running to Dollar Tree in the evening – for nothing in particular and to the grocery store. Or, before my dad passed a few months back, you could find me many of the days at the nursing home in the evening visiting with him and running his errands.

But now since I have a little more evening time, you may catch me gazing at our USA map our flipping through our atlas planning the miles between our home and the next road trip. Or, occasionally, updating social media and scrolling Pinterest. But, that comes and goes.

What is an average day for you like? What is your ideal day like?

Later on in the week, I’ll be back with a post on what my ideal day would look like. And, let me tell you. It doesn’t look like what my average day looks like now.

It looks like I have some work to do.
