One of my favorite national months to observe and celebrate is National Strawberry Month. I love getting dressed in strawberry-themed clothing, writing in strawberry-themed notebooks, and, visiting the strawberry patch to pick fresh sweet strawberries with my daughter. It is certainly becoming our annual May tradition. With that said, we woke up early on Saturday morning and headed to Strawberry Acres for National Strawberry Month.
Strawberry Acres, Here We Come!
Our drive to the strawberry patch is about 45 minutes. On the drive, we simply listened to music and enjoyed the scenic drive. Once we arrived in town, we stopped at 7 Brew for the first time. I ordered a Classic Blondie with cold foam and a kid-size lemonade for my daughter. We then headed to the strawberry patch – just like last year.
Waterproof Hiking Shoes | A Must!
Once we arrived, I got the stroller out and changed into my adidas waterproof hiking shoes. And, I am so glad that I did. Although the strawberry beds were neat and meticulous, the terrain was a bit bumpy and damp. Having on my hiking shoes allowed me to not only navigate the bumpy row, but also keep my daughter steady as she explored the strawberry beds, picking her strawberries, and filling her bucket.
If you have never picked strawberries before, know that it can be an enjoyable activity, however, you must be prepared for a stretch of a walk in a narrow row. Also, the ground may be damp, mushy, or bumpy depending on the recent weather, plowing, etc.
This should not deter you from enjoying your time picking strawberries, you simply need to be prepared with shoes or boots that keep you steady and comfortable, and allow you to navigate the grounds – which is why I appreciate my hiking shoes and am glad I brought them along.
Toddler Rest Breaks | Apparently Much Needed
My daughter also wore her adidas and had no problem navigating the strawberry patch. It was comical to see her taking incremental breaks to rest. I’m not saying she didn’t need rest breaks, it was just hilarious watching her little self stopping along the row having a seat on the strawberry beds before continuing her picking. And, for context, we were only there for about half an hour.
Strawberry-Themed Photos
Throughout our visit, I took photos of us wearing our strawberry-themed attire at Strawberry Acres. Several people noticed and complimented us on how we were, “certainly dressed for the occasion” which certainly made my heart smile. In addition to people noticing our strawberry-themed attire, several people volunteered to take photos for us which I greatly appreciate because I don’t have to break out the tripod or selfie stick.
In fact, in the past few places that we have visited including Indiana Dunes National Park in early May and the Troll Hole Museum in early April, there has always been someone who has volunteered to take our photos. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Final Thoughts
Once she had a half bucket of strawberries, I decided it was time for us to wrap up our visit, pay, and head back home which is what we did. It was such a delightful morning and a beautiful activity to do with my toddler daughter.
